This year’s theme, Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now, highlights the transformative power of human rights in addressing the most pressing challenges of our time.
The Global Student Forum (GSF) joins this global call to action, reaffirming the critical role of education in realizing the promise of human rights. Education is a fundamental right and a transformative tool that empowers individuals, strengthens communities, and fosters peaceful, inclusive societies. Yet, for millions of students around the world, this right remains out of reach due to systemic inequalities, oppressive regimes, and the privatization of education.
The UDHR, adopted in 1948, enshrines education as a universal right, affirming its importance for the dignity and development of all individuals. As a global student movement, GSF is committed to defending this right and advocating for equitable access to education that is free, public, and inclusive.
Reflecting on the current landscape, GSF Executive Director Jacob Blasius remarks, "Education is not just a fundamental right; it is a powerful tool for peace. By investing in education, particularly in conflict-affected regions, we are investing in the future of global peace and security. In these trying times, we need to make investing in education a priority."
This year’s theme is a timely reminder that human rights are not just principles to be celebrated but tools to be wielded. From combating hate speech to countering misinformation, the UDHR inspires action to shape a future where everyone can thrive. The GSF echoes UN Secretary-General António Guterres’s message that “Human rights are the foundation for peaceful, just, and inclusive societies.”
In solidarity with students worldwide, GSF recognizes the urgent need to confront challenges like climate injustice, discrimination, and attacks on academic freedom. As we observe Human Rights Day, we stand with those fighting for the right to education and commit to amplifying their voices on the global stage.
